What structural engineers actually do
A structural engineer works out the loads a building has to carry — dead loads (the building's own weight), live loads (people, furniture, snow if relevant), wind, and in some parts of Australia, seismic activity — then designs the beams, columns, footings and connections to carry them safely. That covers new builds, extensions, and assessing whether an existing structure can take an additional load.
Why it's a legal requirement, not an optional extra
In Victoria, a registered building surveyor won't issue a building permit for structural work without engineering documentation. That's not bureaucracy for its own sake — it's the mechanism that ensures someone qualified has actually checked the numbers before a wall comes down or a second storey goes up.
Where it goes wrong without one
The most common problems we see stem from work done without proper structural input: undersized beams over new openings, footings that don't match the site's soil classification, and retaining walls that weren't designed for the load behind them. All of these are expensive to fix after the fact and straightforward to avoid with a design done up front.
